Microsoft Excel Tutorial: Nested Functions Using the FX Button | MrExcel Podcast.
Welcome back to another episode of the MrExcel podcast, sponsored by Easy XL. In today's episode, we will be discussing nested functions using the FX button. This topic was suggested by one of our listeners, Rob, who was looking for tips on how to build nested functions. So, let's dive in and see what we can learn.
First, let's address the fact that nested functions used to be available in the insert function's argument dialog box. However, it seems to have disappeared in newer versions of Excel. If anyone knows how to access this feature, please let me know. In the meantime, I have come up with a workaround using the IF function and the FX button.
To start, we have a set of rules where 1 is less than or equal to 18, and we label this as "low". Using the IF function, we can type in "IF(A1<=18, "low", "more rules")". Then, we click on the FX button to dismiss the function arguments and click anywhere inside the IF function to bring it back. This allows us to add a second set of function arguments for the "more rules" statement. We repeat this process for the remaining rules, using the FX button each time to avoid any errors.
While this method works for building nested functions, I want to point out that there is a better way to handle this using the true version of the VLOOKUP function. By creating a lookup table and using the true option, we can easily assign categories without having to nest multiple IF functions. This can be especially useful if you have a large number of categories to assign.
I hope this episode was helpful in understanding nested functions and how to use the FX button to make the process easier.
