Basic rundown
TS is Traditional Surrogate/Surrogacy
This is the surrogate using their own egg so they are genetically the 'mother'.
GS is Gestational Surrogate/surrogacy.
This is where the surrogate has no relation to the baby and undergoes IVF.
This an be IPS egg and sperm, donor sperm or egg but MUST be genetically at least one of the IPS. Cannot be both donor egg and donor sperm (be that the surrogate eggs or not)
IPs have to be in an 'enduring relationship'. Single people cannot pursue surrogacy sadly.
They must be domiciled in the UK. You cannot be a surrogate for anyone outside of the U.K.
You can only claim 'reasonable expenses'. You cannot be paid to be a surrogate. The courts are hotting up on checking finances so keep a note of what goes where (I always start with saving receipts but usually fail by the end! Lol)
Expenses are usually £6000-18,000. (£12-15,000 is average) but they have to be justified.
You should be careful, ideally not be a surrogate if claiming benefits. The benefits place will view it as income even though it's not and will usually stop any benefits (inc tax credits) until they are satisfied and it can take ages. So if you do them any make sure you can survive without them.
It however is NOT an IPs job to cover your benefits. That's unrealistic at best.
They are NOT negotiable. If an IP cannot afford them, move on.
It's amazing how quickly costs mount and you don't want to be screwed before you start.
Pre pregnancy expenses are separate and non refundable.
If TS insems fees can be claimed. ONE PER MONTH NOT PER INSEM. And usually at £50.
Transfer fee is usually £150 per cycle. These things can cover anything from travel costs, food, childcare, vitamins, tests and so on.
If you need more childcare etc then that can be covered too obviously but this is a guide and to give an idea of what they are for.
Make sure you are on the same page when matching.
When would you terminate if at all?
Would you reduce?
What week/stage would be your cut of?
Would religion be an issues? Would you go on a social diet? Cut out pork etc if wanted.
How close do you want to be? During and after. (Obviously it's known IPs will say they will stay in touch and ditch you anyway. It's a risk we take)
Any other issues? Discuss them.
Take time to get to know people. It's ok to talk to a few people but be honest about it.
Meet up in person before matching.
Don't cut corners.
TS or GS, agency or indi, you should all have a CRB, medical testing and psych evaluations.
