NUH physiotherapist demonstrates the running and agility training exercises you should do about four to five months after your anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) reconstruction surgery in this last episode of a three-part video series. During this third phase of the ACL rehabilitation which will last until about six months post-surgery, the exercises which you will be doing will help you regain speed and coordination, and control in change of direction.
Do note that you should do the agility drill shown in the video only under the supervision of your physiotherapist.
In the fourth phase of the ACL rehabilitation which takes place from six to nine months post-surgery, our physiotherapist will demonstrate some sports-specific training for the eventual return to high level competitive sports.
You will undergo assessments with your physiotherapist to assess if you are fit to return to sports. Some of the tests include:
- Isokinetic test which is a strength test for the muscle around the knee using they dynamometer. The results are used to determine the difference in strength between the two legs.
- Functional test which includes the jumping drills to assess the ability to generate force for jumping and the stability in landing between legs. These tests help assess if you are ready to return to sports activities and also identify the risk of re-injury.
