Millions of Indonesians have started leaving urban centres for their hometowns and villages ahead of the Muslim holiday season of Eid. The annual mass exodus, known locally as "mudik", is taking place after a two-year ban due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Government leaders are still calling for caution. while travellers have seen the cost of their journeys jump. 85 million Indonesians are expected to make the journey home. The transport ministry said 23 million cars and 17 million motorcycles will hit the road over the course of the holiday.
