The Ministry of External Affairs has announced the names of 27 overseas Indians for the Pravasi Bharatiya Samman Award 2023. Among them is Dr Darshan Singh Dhaliwal too. But who is he?

Hi my name is Shweta Sharma and Dr DarShan Singh Dhaliwal is a US-based billionaire. He is the same man who was not allowed to enter India two years ago. This was when he was supporting the farmer protests.

It was the intervening night of October 23-24, 2021 when after questioning for several hours at the Indira Gandhi International Airport, Dr Singh was asked to return to the US. Reportedly, Dhaliwal had organised a community kitchen for the farmers protesting against the, now repealed, farm laws.

Darshan Singh Dhaliwal is one of the largest gasoline retailers in the United States. By 2004, he owned over 1,000 gas stations in 11 states and had annual sales of 2 billion dollars, which was five times the size of Punjab’s yearly budget. In 1999, Dhaliwal also entered into Punjab’s electoral politics by running his younger brother Surjit Singh Rakhra on a SAD ticket in the Lok Sabha elections.

As per media report, Dhaliwal said that he was not part of the farmer protests. His objective was to provide food.
