Onigiri is a rice ball wrapped in a dark seaweed called nori. Since ancient times, rice balls were prepared to eat along the way in Japan. During the Edo period (1603-1868), it began to be common wrapping rice balls in seaweed so they could eat them avoiding sticky hands. Nowadays, however, part of the magic of eating onigiris is feel the contrast between the crunchy dry seaweed outside and the texture of the rice on the inside, that could be filled with a variety of ingredients, from salmon, umeboshi, egg or even cheese.
Onigiris are easy to eat anywhere in Japan, from restaurants to convinis. But eat them in a specialized local it’s a complete different experience than buy them wrapped in plastic from supermarket.
