Hydrogen Fuel Cells Explained - GCSE Chemistry | kayscience.com
Hydrogen fuel cells produce electricity by reacting hydrogen and oxygen in a fuel cell. The electrodes are made of graphite. Hydrogen gas is supplied to the negative electrode and oxygen gas is supplied to the positive electrode. The electrolyte is alkaline e.g. potassium hydroxide solution which contains dissolved OH- ions. The hydrogen gas diffuses through the graphite electrode and reacts with OH- ions forming water, supplying electrons to the circuit. The oxygen gas diffuses through the graphite electrode, reacting with the hydrogen ions to form hydroxide ions.
