Voting in the general election is continuing across the country.
A final poll last night predicted that Labour was on course to win the largest majority since 1832 and that the Conservatives were facing a heavy defeat.
Predictions of a Labour landslide do not appear to affected turnout, election officials said.
Voters across the United Kingdom to cast ballots in a snap general election called by Prime Minister Rishi Sunak.
Opinion polls have consistently suggested that Sunak’s Conservative Party will lose to Keir Starmer’s main opposition Labour Party after 14 years in power.
Polling stations will be open from 7am to 10pm local time (06:00 GMT to 21:00 GMT).
Voters will elect 650 lawmakers representing as many constituencies. The party with a majority in the House of Commons – either alone or with the backing of another party – will be tasked with forming the next government while its leader will become prime minister.
A party needs to win at least 50 percent of the seats – 326 – to secure a majority in the House of Commons and be asked to form a government by the monarch, King Charles III.
The members of Parliament’s upper chamber, the House of Lords, are appointed rather than elected.
If no party wins a majority, there is a hung parliament. If this occurs, the largest party can choose to form a coalition with other parties.
