Acting President Hwang Kyo-ahn called for a thorough review of strategies to tackle the diplomatic and security challenges South Korea is currently facing .. at a meeting with key ambassadors.
Foreign Minister Yun Byung-se held discussions on the tasks ahead with the same diplomats later in the day.
Kwon Soa shares with us what was discussed.
Acting President and Prime Minister Hwang Kyo-ahn said Monday... the recent challenges surrounding the Korean Peninsula and Northeast Asia are as difficult as never before... during a review of the diplomatic and security issues South Korea is confronting.
In a meeting with South Korea's ambassadors to the United States, China, Japan, Russia and the United Nations,... Hwang underscored the rising threats from North Korea.
"Not only is North Korea's advancement of its nuclear and missile development raising the level of insecurity on the Korean Peninsula, but the possibility of additional provocations or deceptive moves for dialogue during the transition of the U.S. government are being brought up."
The prime minister encouraged related ministries to do their utmost to make citizens feel secure and called for multilateral ways to maintain communication with other countries.
The remarks appeared to be a reference to concerns about a diplomatic vacuum in South Korea,... due to the current political turmoil.
The foreign affairs ministry, being the most "related" ministry, held a separate meeting with the same ambassadors.
"That we're concentrating on discussions focused on diplomacy and security policy this early in the year not only shows that the internal and external conditions are more unstable than ever before,... but also that various issues are occurring simultaneously."
These include the uncertainties associated with the incoming Trump administration,... tensions with China,... due to its opposition to the U.S. missile defense system THAAD,... and tensions with Japan,... due to the recent installation of a "comfort woman" statue in the southeastern city of Busan that symbolizes the victims of Japan's wartime sexual slavery.
"To tackle these issues, the government is calling for closer engagement with the U.S., China, Japan and Russia,... as part of an active and preemptive diplomatic roadmap for 2017.
