Kathmandu Durbar Square is one of the most popular places to visit in Kathmandu. Also known as Basantpur Durbar or Hanuman Dhoka, Kathmandu Durbar Square never fails to impress visitors with its rich history. With many old structures containing palaces, courtyards and temples, the site has been recognised as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Its historical significance and beautiful architecture make it an attractive Kathmandu Tourist Places.
The Kathmandu Durbar Square is where the Malla and Shah kings were crowned and from where they ruled the country from 1768 to 1896. It is believed that the construction of Durbar Square began around the 3rd century. But the major buildings, monuments and temples were built between the 13th and 18th centuries. Today, the Kathmandu Durbar Square is still the place where many festivals, ceremonies and religious rituals are held. After the devastating earthquake that struck Nepal in 2015, a large part of the Durbar Square was destroyed. However, it was quickly repaired and large parts of it have once again been transformed into their splendid form.
One of the most important attractions inside the Durbar Square complex, is an idol of Kalbhairav. According to mythology, Kalbhairav is a terrifying incarnation of Lord Shiva. A large number of devotees visit the place throughout the year.
The local market 'Aasan' is the best place to buy souvenirs, handicrafts, and much more. There are handicraft shops around the Gaddi Baithak, where various types of attractive handicrafts are available.
