The year 2022 has presented a multitude of challenges for the transatlantic alliance. From Russia’s invasion of Ukraine and China’s rising global influence to the ongoing climate crisis and global democratic backsliding, the need for transatlantic cooperation remains high. But how do the European and North American publics view the state of the transatlantic partnership with regard to these developments? And, considering the various responses to the unfolding Zeitenwende, what can German public perspectives tell us about the foreign policy direction of the current traffic light government?
Against this backdrop, the Embassy of Canada to Germany, the German Marshall Fund of the United States, and the Bertelsmann Foundation invite you to a presentation and discussion of Transatlantic Trends 2022, a leading annual transatlantic public opinion survey. The 2022 edition of the study was conducted in 14 countries (11 countries in Europe as well as Canada, Türkiye, and the United States) in June/July 2022. It sheds light on, among other things, the perception of major players in geopolitics, the respective roles of NATO and the EU in European security, and the state of democracy.
