The Busoni concerto, at this point, is certainly the largest and most challenging work for piano and orchestra ever to have entered the standard repertoire. This was a recent occurrence- to be honest, the piece has probably been performed more times in the last ten years than in the entire century preceding them. Learning to like this mammoth mostly comes down to accepting the occasional vulgarity and (eventually) coming to enjoy the excess. Grosvenor joins the rapidly growing list of major pianists brave enough to attempt playing it live; hopefully with performances this good the piece will be guaranteed a long life.
