I was so delighted (and scared) that I picked this wine up at auction. There are a few reasons why I decided to buy this wine: 1/ price was really good; 2/ 1991 was a spectacular vintage for Napa; 3/ provenance is exceptional....came from the personal cellar of Joseph Phelps.
Joseph Phelps founded his winery in 1973. He made his fortune in Colorado in the construction industry, which gave him the means to purchase his winery. He purchased a cattle ranch in St. Helena and turned it into a vineyard. He now has vineyards all over the Napa Valley. In 1974, he released his first vintage of his flagship wine, Insignia, which was Napa's first proprietary Bordeaux style blend.
Joseph Phelps passed away in 2015 but his family still owns the winery. Again, I purchased this wine as part of his estate sale with wines he had collected over the years in his own personal cellar.
This wine is 100% Cabernet Sauvignon that was aged in French barrels for 18 months.
