A video showing my simple varnishing technique. It's simple because varnishing an oil painting is actually very easy. I like to varnish all my oil paintings now, and it's been a while since I've shown the process. I've also changed my type and brand of varnish too. (loads more info below, and links to Varnish and Brush)
I'm using Gamvar (a brilliant painters varnish) these days for varnishing my oil paintings. I find it very easy to work with. Incidentally i use the same companies odourless mineral spirit called Gamsol, it's brilliant and has honestly transformed my process.
To varnish an oil painting with Gamvar the painting MUST be dry to the touch, this could mean you can varnish a painting in a few days! Some other (more old fashioned) types of varnish might require the painting to be left for six months before varnishing!!!
Also the oil painting should be clean. You can see this in this video where some small areas of painting didn't take the varnish well, and the painting remained dry in those parts. This could be just some oil from my hands or maybe one of my paint tubes is old or a little contaminated. It doesn't matter though, as i show you what to do to fix it.
It was an easy fix for me, but if it doesn't work for you, don't worry! remove the varnish with a lint free rag like I did, then gently rub Gamvar over the paint surface to give it a really good clean. Or genuine artist's turpentine of you don't have Gamsol. Don't press too hard or be vigorous here, you just want to remove any dirt or oils, NOT THE PAINT!!!
Then go back and do my method again. It's never failed me yet :)
