Poondi mahan history.
Rain is coming take an umbrella, Mahan is comminggive a way, which is a song sung by a hermit sadhu GurunTHn, running with rejoice here and there in the street in mettuppalayam , a village near kalasapakkam belongs to thiruvannamalai dist in tamilnadu. Heavy rain for 3 days which proved his first statement and also poondi mahan came to that place which also proved the second statement of sadhhu. But ignorant people ignored his second statement.
Initially poondimahan looks like a mendicant aesthetic beggar, with uncleaned body, running nose, uncombed hair, wearin too many shirts having his shirt wallet contains full of waste papers,cigarettes stuff and empty cigarette packets, etc and a big bag tied into a cloth as like a mad man but as per the hindu shastra these features described as brahmavarishtan/ avathoothar a topmost and final stage in spirituality.
In the beginning stage swamy is customary to sit near the bamboo shop next to kakangarai vinayagar temple. It didn’t like that bamboo shopper. So decides to take him somewhere faraway . with the help of his two friends picked him up on the bus and took him to cheyyar bus terminus and left. Again hr came to his shop they were shocked to see that he was sitting where he was sitting. Some who have heared of this have begun ti realize that he is no ordinary man.
He would lie for many days in the rever sand unable to walk in the sun at noon without food and drink.Swamy will sit inside the inaccessible bush for several days . People who saw all this strated calling him not crazy and the “bundle swamy’ (Moottai swamy) “Dirty swamy (Azukku Swamy).
Once swamy was sitting in the river, it rained and flooded. The people thought that swamy had been swept away. Three days later when he saw the place where he was sitting after the flood had dried up, the body buried in the river sand allover only his hair was visible . Suprisingly swamy was awake , like from sleepwhen he saw the sand being removed. From then , they realized that he was agreat gnani and called him as “ Aarttru swamigal”
Once a way to visit a female devotee from Chennai , thieves stole her jewelry. The women appealed to the swamy and asked a man from small village to come and buy a piece of iron .Swami rubbed the piece of iron with his hands and turned it into gold and gave it to the women.The person who saw it gave a piece of irpon and asked him to turn the iron into gold for himself. Swamy refused and persecuted him and planned to kill him when swamy was in river one night that man went with two men to kill swamy but suprisisingly his body , arms ,legs were severed separately . frightened by this they run away asuming that someone had killed swamy. The next day they noticed swamy as usually walking in the street and they realized that swamy was a great gnani and apologized. Actually at that time swami did “KANDAYOGA” : WHICH DIVIDES THE BODY INTO 9 PARTS separately and reconnects
Mahan then sat on the porch of a drive way in the village of poondi sitting like that swamy did not get up for food and defecation or any other need . thus he sat at the same shrine for about 19 years until he attain the Maha Samadhi in 1978. He was known as sri Poondi Mahan who gave blessings to the people who sought him and guided them.
