Potassium is one of the most important nutrient that is required by our body. It is also an electrolyte that maintains the overall body balance. They are responsible for various functions such as building up of the muscle, regulating the cardiac activity and maintaining the pH balance. An overall balance of sodium and potassium is important to maintain the optimum blood pressure. Since today we eat a lot of food which is loaded with sodium it is important for us to include a lot of food which are rich in potassium so that we can maintain this balance. We will also lose a lot of potassium through urine or sweat and hence it is very important to have it replinished. Low potassium levels can result in a medical condition called as hypokalemia where you have low energy and low stamina, increased muscular cramps or digestive issues. Cases of individuals with kidney disorders care should be taken to ensure that the potassium intake is not too high. Some cases it is also avoided or restricted. Foods which are high in potassium include fruits such as banana, citrus fruits such as kiwi, oranges, moosambi, etc or apples and apricots. Some of the vegetables that include high amount of potassium include potatoes, broccoli and green leafy vegetables such as kale, spinach etc. Even whole cereals or whole grains also contains considerable amount of potassium. Apart from these nuts, seeds, fish and chicken also contains a fair amount of potassium. It is noticed that foods high in caffeine or tannins such as coffee or tea and alcohol intake inhibit the absorption of potassium. Today we have lot of processed foods which are canned or dehydrated fruits and vegetables and most of these do not have the potassium content and hence always include a lot of fresh fruits and vegetables to ensure that you have sufficient potassium.
