Meteorites may be briefly defined, as small fragments of astronomical bodies, mainly made of stone and iron, which have fallen to surface of our planet from space.
According to contemporary astronomers, the meteoroids are asteroid fragments that were formed during the collision of cosmic bodies.
We have all seen shooting stars in the sky but not many people know in detail, that meteoroids stand behind this natural phenomenon, which takes place all the way in space.
Meteoroids, which get to reach the surface of our planet is a great find for the astronomers, as they receive a unique opportunity to analyze the constituents of meteorites in laboratory conditions.
In this interactive video presentation we tried to show the most interesting facts about the meteoroids and their activity in space.
Here is the brief list of covered topics:
- a quick definition of the meteoroid and how it’s different from meteors or shooting stars and meteorites;
- the speed at which a meteoroid is travelling through space;
- how the International Space Station is protected from collisions with these celestial bodies;
- the blast and damage caused by the Russian meteor;
- how meteor showers are formed;
- the most popular meteor shower – the Perseids;
- Hoba as the largest meteorite;
- why the colored trails are formed;
- an approximate number of documented meteorite finds.
