Mazda’s long-awaited move to electric power has arrived in Australia in the form of the new MX-30 E35 Astina. However, while this funky compact SUV looks great outside and in, and is fun to drive as Iain Curry discovers, it has a big problem. It costs the same as a Tesla Model 3 or Hyundai Kona Electric while offering less than half the range on WLTP measurements – so what’s happening here?
Is the MX-30’s style and handling quotient enough to convince you that it’s the right electric car to buy? Would you consider an MX-30 EV? Or do rivals like the Model 3, Niro, Leaf and Kona make more sense?
