In this scene Violetta has just met Alfredo Germont, an earnest young man who professes his undying love for her. Faced with the dilemma of leaving her vapid existence as a courtesan in Paris for true love but facing possible desertion she vows to live life "sempre libera"- forever free with joy and delight her only objectives.
