This confusing circular shopping district was named after George V’s uncle, the Duke of Connaught, and fashioned after the Palladian colonnades of Bath. Greying, whitewashed, colonnaded streets radiate out from the central circle of Rajiv Chowk, with blocks G to N in the outer circle and A to F in the inner circle. Today they mainly harbour brash, largely interchangeable but popular, bars, and international chain stores, plus a few good hotels and restaurants. Touts are rampant.
Connaught place, an icon of Delhi
Delhi's Connaught Place (CP) is the beating heart of the city, capturing its commercial, cultural, and historical essence. Its colourful streets and unique circular design have made it famous, and is considered iconic not just in Delhi but all across India. The area is instantly recognisable on any map of Delhi as a big circle in the middle with radial roads spreading out in all directions.
In what was a jungle during it's early days, Connaught Place was built by the British in the early 20th century between 1929 and 1933. Robert Tor Russell designed it with inspiration from Bath, England's Royal Crescent. Connaugh Place was named after British royal family member Duke of Connaught Prince Arthur. He was the third son of Queen Victoria and uncle of King George VI of the United Kingdom, who visited India in 1921
Connaught Place is divided into blocks, each with its own set of owners, unlike modern commercial properties. The primary custodian of this iconic space is the Government of India, as it owns the land on which CP is located. Nonetheless, different people and families own the buildings in CP. Early commercial establishments belonged to traders from the Kashmere Gate area: Harnarain Gopinath (Harnarains), Kanter's, Galgotia and Snowhite.
Connaught Place in Delhi-NCR marked a 33 per cent year-on-year growth in rental rates for high street retail space, the highest amongst the tier 1 cities, in 2023. The rent for per square feet per month ranges from Rs 300 to Rs 700. The majority of these properties were, however, rented out at nominal rates prior to independence, sometimes for as little as a few hundred rupees. It is noteworthy that records indicate that some people were able to rent as many as fifty stores.
Connaught Place houses the second largest flag in India with dimensions of 60 feet wide and 90 feet long. New Delhi's first luxury hotel opened in 1931 on Janpath near Connaught Place. Early commercial establishments in Connaught Place belonged to traders from the Kashmere Gate area. The area is an underground shopping paradise, with Palika Bazar running underneath Connaught Place. Another famous market here is Janpath market, popular all across India.
