The definition of terroir is perhaps the most debated concept in the world of wine. In underpins the concept of the appellation system in the belief that a ‘sense of place’ can be translated into what we taste in the glass.
Many would argue that the term terroir is often mis-conflated with ‘soil’, and yet it is far more than just the ground that the vine is grown upon. In fact, some say that terroir is the culmination of a great many factors of the growing environment, from elevation and aspect to viticultural traditions, and even microbes.
Conversely, there are some who say that the term is too broad, too ‘wishy washy’, and serves only to confuse science with romantic ideals.
In this 45 minute deep-dive on terroir, Anna will explore not only soils, but other factors that align to make wines internationally recognisable and discuss how far people go to give the term a solid definition. Expect plenty of geeky examples from all around the world, together with a discussion on how helpful the concept of ‘terroir’ is, both now and in the future.
The wines to be tasted are listed below.
Unlike previous 'Focus On' sessions, we’ve decided to use four wines for this event rather than three as it will be easier to talk about terroir when comparing pairs. You do not need to buy both pairs, although of course you’re welcome to if you wish! And, as always, you don’t need to buy the wine at all if you would simply like to log on and enjoy the event.
