While we were in Chattanooga, we were sure to visit the Railroad museum just outside the city. Luckily, we arrived in time to catch the steam engine tour 30 minutes before departure to the other side of the museum.
We chose the non air-conditioned cars for a more authentic effect. The train initially starts in the forwards direction onto a Y track and then reverses at the railroad crossing after the track is switched so that it can leave the station. Like a K turn on a car.
Once at the other side, we were able to see the locomotive turned around on the turn table, now controlled by a small motor on a bearing, was once pushed manually by several men.
