The gu-zheng (Chinese plucked zither), which was invented over 2,300 years ago, has 21 strings and is played using picks often made of turtle shell in the old days. The highly-respected Alice Gu-zheng Ensemble was founded in 2002, and have 443 performances for the last 20 years in Washington DC Metropolitan area.
