(20 Feb 2014) Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov on Thursday blamed the West for the ongoing chaos in Ukraine, saying that the opposition have been unwilling to negotiate because of sanctions imposed by the US.
"America has already imposed sanctions in regards to some of the Ukrainian government representatives. In this way they are creating additional stimuli for the opposition not to compromise, and indirectly, if not directly, urging protesters to continue the lawlessness and chaos," Lavrov said.
Speaking during a visit to the Iraqi capital Baghdad, Lavrov also said the political opposition in Ukraine did not want to "distance themselves from extremist groups".
Lavrov also spoke about the ongoing humanitarian situation in Syria and said that anything crossing into the country must be strictly monitored.
"Cross-border supplies should be organised in accordance with international humanitarian law," he said.
"We have so many examples when, not food, not medicines, but arms and other equipment for the fighters are being supplied across the border without asking anyone and if people are so concerned about using this particular method of providing assistance, they could use the same route to supply arms," he added.
Earlier Lavrov held talks with his Iraqi counterpart, Hoshyar Zebari, where they spoke about the conflict in Syria as well as improving bilateral ties.
