People in NYC demand the release of Freedom Theatre Producing Director Mustafa Sheta & Chair of the Freedom Theatre Board Bilal al Sadi who were violently detained by Israel Defense Forces (IDF) on December 13, 2023.
The interactive, beautiful "Cultural Resistance March for Palestine" with performances was organized by individuals of the New York theater and artist community in solidarity with The Freedom Theatre and the global movement for the liberation, safety, and rights of Palestinian people and artists living under occupation was in Manahatta*, Lenapehoking**, on Saturday, January 13, 2024.
“Last night (January 13, 2024), exactly a month since the latest attack on @thefreedomtheatre, New York showed up strong joining us in the Cultural Resistance March through Theater Row and Times Square. We filled the streets with music and poetry in a creative act of defiance and beauty in solidarity with all Palestinian artists and prisoners.
At every corner we were met by performance and words uplifting Palestinian culture and storytellers, starting with composer @notfouad, dance by @anikaya.dance.theater accompanied by Amel Khalil reading Hiba Abu Nada’s “I Grant you Refuge” at the steps of the NY Library, @brooklynomads in the back of a truck, @allimitecollective reading text from @thefreedomtheatre at BofA and Spamalot, @ali_dineen singing a heartbreaking rendition of Masters of War at the Bob Dylan musical, @resistancerevivalchorus shining a light so bright it silenced the counter protestors, Najla Said sitting atop @joshjoshjoshnyc shoulders to recite a Gaza Monologue from @ashtartheatre in front of Harry Potter on Broadway, @opalanietet of @eagleprojecttheatre and Lenape Nation offering words on the current occupation we live in in so-called US, @betoobyrne_ reading the words of Rafeef Ziadah, mass choreography and soft blockades with @romainejnyc songs, chants throughout with Alexis Stern and Michi, closing with a Pakistani song from @singing_professor and music from @rudemechanicalorchestra.
Thank you to... everyone who came out to support our demands to release Producing Director @mustafa_sheta and Chair of the Board of @thefreedomtheatre Bilal Al Sadi.
We demand an end to the targeting of Palestinian artists, cultural workers, journalists and cultural institutions. We are in solidarity with the five demands stated by the @palestinianyouthmovement. We will not stop creating and fighting. “The third Intifada will be a cultural one.”- Juliano Mer Khamis

Before New York City, there was Lenapehoking**, the ancestral land of the Lenape people. Forcibly displaced by White European invaders, their land was stolen to create settler states. We live on stolen land. LAND BACK.
Lenapehoking is widely translated as 'homelands of the Lenape'. The territory of the Lenape people before White Europeans invaders arrived was known to them as Lenapehoking, and it covered roughly the area between New York City and Philadelphia, including all of New Jersey, eastern Pennsylvania and part of the state of Delaware.
The Lenape, New York City and Manhattan’s original inhabitants, called
the island Manahatta*, which means “hilly island.” White European invaders stole Manahatta and all of New York City from the Lenape people.
