Salinas police officers followed a man holding gardening shears down North Sanborn Road and shot him. Police said they went to the East Salinas neighborhood because a woman called 911 reporting that a man tried to break into her house on Elkington Avenue, threatened to kill her, choked her dog, and exposed himself with lewd gestures.
When police arrived, the man repeatedly ignored commands to put the shears down, an officer's Taser misfired, and the man tried to walk away. Police said they opened fire when the man turned around to face them, and lunged toward officers with shears.
