Researchers from around the world agree that girls’ education, gender equality and women’s empowerment are crucial to tackling climate change.
But what does this look like exactly? What are the connections between educating girls and our changing climate? And why should we act now?
CLIMATE CHANGE AND GIRLS’ EDUCATION CONNECTION #1 - JUSTICE
Analysts predict that in 2021, at least 4 million girls from low-income countries will be out of school due to climate-related events. And if we continue with business as usual, by 2025, this number will jump to 12.5 million girls out of school… girls in low-income countries are bearing the brunt of the climate crisis despite being least responsible for it.
CLIMATE CHANGE AND GIRLS’ EDUCATION CONNECTION #2 - RESILIENCE
From our work with girls in Sierra Leone and Uganda we know that when girls understand and exercise their sexual and reproductive rights, they are able to make decisions for themselves, benefitting their families, communities and countries.
CLIMATE CHANGE AND GIRLS’ EDUCATION CONNECTION #3 - INNOVATION
Access to quality, gender-equal education for girls would improve the adaptation strategies and technologies of the world... making us smarter, stronger and more resilient.
One Girl harnesses the power of education to create lasting change for girls and their communities. We collaborate with communities across Sierra Leone and Uganda to dismantle barriers that prevent women and girls from reaching their full potential.
