We all love Netflix’s latest period drama The Empress, but just what did this engaging television series exploring the life of Empress Elizabeth aka Sisi of Austria get wrong? Who was portrayed completely differently than their real life counterpart? Was Sisi really concerned with helping the common people?

Netflix’s The Empress portrays Sisi as the Empress of the people–wanting to change how royals treated the plight of the common people.

In reality, Sisi’s major concerns were about herself. She longed for freedom, and spent her free time focusing on how to make herself happy. She loved horseback riding and craved freedom above all else–for herself.
