After a 6-month, 21-day journey, NASA's InSight spacecraft has landed on Mars — near its equator on the western side of a flat, smooth expanse of lava plain called Elysium Planitia.
Confirmation of landing was received at the Jet Propulsion Laboratory in Pasadena, California on Nov, 26, 2018.The signal affirming that InSight successfully completed its voyage was relayed to JPL via NASA's experimental Mars Cube One (MarCO) spacecraft.
The InSight mission will study the deep interior of Mars to learn how all rocky planets formed, including Earth. The lander's instruments include a seismometer to detect marsquakes, and a probe that will monitor the flow of heat from the planet's interior.
This video shows the celebration at NASA when confirmation of the landing happened as well as several animations about the landing and its mission. It also has some footage of the InSIght lander being prepared prior to its launch to Mars.
