(9 Feb 2022) NEW YORK FASHION WEEK RETURNS WITH A NEW IMMERSIVE EXPERIENCE
Workers wearing masks have been unloading supplies for New York Fashion week at a Tribeca space the past few days. The Senior Vice President of Fashion Events for IMG, Dominic Kaffka, says the experience over the last couple of years has prepared them to keep people in attendance safe.
"Yeah, I mean, I would say we're used to doing New York Fashion Week during the pandemic. This is now our fifth season, believe it or not, that we're staging this event. So we have a lot of training. I would say we have a lot of experience to put up a safe event for all our guests and our designer clients," said Kaffka.
Some shows will be virtual while others will take place at Spring Studio in Tribeca as well as office buildings, and warehouses with a smaller capacity of people allowed.
He didn't want to reveal any details about particular designers but says the public is in for a treat with a new immersive experience, 'The Art of Rodarte,' aimed at making fashion more accessible.
Kaffka said, "In the end, every one of us has to buy clothing. So the best approach really is to enable our designers to interact directly with the customer, right? And that's the reason why we came up with an immersive experience that shows the history past, present and future of Rodarte for example. And so the designers really can interact with sorry so that customers can really interact with our designers."
The exhibit is special since it was limited to few people in previous years.
"In the past new York fashion week, the show was an industry only event so you had to have an invite from a designer or a partner to actually attend. Now we're opening it up for everyone. So everyone can come from Saturday to Tuesday to experience a really amazing immersive exhibit," said Kaffka.
Althought staff is prepared after organizing several events during the pandemic, Kaffka says they are hoping future events will have a pre-pandemic normalcy.
"So there's not much difference than in the past two seasons because the fact that Everyone really gets used to the environment. our designers love to come back and working with us, so we're really looking forward to hopefully the last season during the pandemic. The spring always makes the environment a little bit better. So we were hoping for a COVID free season next September," Kaffka said.
Fashion week kicks off on Friday (FEB. 11). He says the official website for fashion week also has streaming videos and merchandise for those interested.
