The city of Nijmegen played a decisive role in Operation Market Garden. With two bridges across the wide river Waal (the main branch of the Rhine), it was crucial to the Allied advance toward Arnhem and then Germany. On Sept. 17, the first attempt to clear the two bridges was made by units of the 82nd Airborne Division, which had landed in the nearby village of Groesbeek. The American troops managed to approach the Waal Bridge to 400 meters, but were beaten back by German troops. The next day the attack was launched again and again they failed to take control of the bridge. On September 19, ground forces of the 30th Army Corps made contact with airborne troops at Grave. A combined attack on the bridges was launched, this time with support from tanks of the Guards Armored Division. But again the Allied attack was repulsed just before the bridges. By this time, the German defenses had received reinforcements from the 10th SS Armored Division. It was clear that the bridges could not be stormed. A plan was made to attack the bridges from both sides at the same time. That meant troops had to cross the river by boat. On Sept. 20, units of the 82nd Airborne Division crossed the Waal under murderous fire. They managed to reach the north bank and held their ground there. From there, they captured the bridges of Nijmegen and liberated the city. Lean more about this Forgotten WW II Battle.
