The Whakatipu Winter Swim was inspired by the growth of wild swimming in our region. Over the last decade we have seen a handful of regular swimmers, to now a growing past time of skin and wetsuited swimmers, either dipping or experiencing epic adventures in Lake Whakatipu. Suddenly it went from Summer to every season of the year. A hardy bunch still refuse to put neoprene on and those who said they’d never remove the neoprene are now seen squealing in just there togs as they tentatively enter the water.
Braving the extreme cold water of Lake Wakatipu, the participants of the Winter Legend swim in Queestown completed a 500m or 1000m race during the Winter Festivalin 2022. The gorgeous surroundings and excellent organisation made for a busy, well-enjoyed spectacle and some bone-chilling laps in the harbor of Queenstown.
We now hope to have an annual winter swim in Queenstown and look forward to seeing you here, with or without your wetsuits.
