Zakir graduated from MIET in Electrical Engineering in 2006 and obtained an all-India rank of 190 in GATE to secure admission to the M.Tech programme at IIT-Delhi, specializing in Power Systems. After graduating from IIT he joined NTPC Ltd. As Electrical Engineer and worked there for 3 years. He enrolled for his PhD in Power Systems from the prestigious Aalborg University, Denmark in 2011 on full scholarship . He completed his PhD in a record time of two years and eleven months .
He was subsequently employed with the Electricity Research Center (ERC), University College Dublin, Ireland as Senior Power Systems Researcher for one year, finally returning to India and joining IIT Guwahati as Assistant Professor, Department of Electronics and Electrical Engineering.
He has published over 25 peer-reviewed international research papers and is a registered expert by European Research and Innovation Group under the European Commission
