Hi everyone! My name is Dan, and I am a Veterinarian.
Today I am covering seizures in dogs. Seizures in dogs can be caused by many different things medically, but today I will cover epilepsy. Epilepsy in dogs is caused by an abnormal miss firing in the dog brain.
Seizures can be very scary! Seizures or epilepsy in a dog can be very obvious. Obvious signs of a seizure include: Convulsing, loss of consciousness, urination or deification, vocalization, and or ridged legs. And, other times the symptoms may not be near as obvious. A dog could have a focal seizure which will only produce mild symptoms: Localized muscle tremors, confusion, "star gazing", "fly biting".
Seizures tend to be a diagnosis of exclusion. A veterinarian will do some blood work to make sure your dog is healthy. Additional imaging like an MRI may be recommended in some situations.
Once seizures are diagnosed, a veterinarian will prescribe seizure medications. Seizure medications can be given life long to help prevent and control seizures caused by epilepsy.
