The F-8 Crusader was the US Navy's premiere supersonic fighter jet of the 1950's, and served throughout the Vietnam War, all the way through to 1999 with the French Navy. Though commonly nicknamed "the Last Gunfighter", and treated as a purpose-built dogfighter... this is only partially true. The F-8 did prove a capable dogfighter, and was built to maneuver with other jets of its time. Its' main role however was the same as that of the heavier F-4 Phantom, with the Crusader able to be fielded from Essex Class carriers which couldn't launch F-4's.
Still a cool nickname, though not quite an accurate one.
