Question: Why do I need to use online journal articles in my studies?
Answer:
• Articles are more up-to-date than books
• They offer greater detail and insight into research
• Peer-reviewed articles are considered as more reliable than information that you might find on a website.
Before you start searching for online journal articles make sure that you are logged into VPN.
If you need more information about VPN see the video on our webpage [ Ссылка ]
I will take you through two scenarios:-
1. When you know the details of a specific journal article.
2. When you do not know the details specific article but you are looking for journal articles for your research.
1. When you know the details of a specific journal article.
It is best to use the library catalogue to get to the online journal. You will find a search box or link for on our Library pages or in SUSSED. Or you can use this web address [ Ссылка ]
By using the library catalogue to search for the name of the journal you can check to be sure that the Library has a subscription to the online journal and what years you will be able to access. Remember – the library catalogue does not list individual articles.
Here is a reference for a journal article that we will use as an example.
Kim, K.T. and Hanna, S.D. (2016) ‘The impact of the 2008-2009 stock market crash of the wealth of U.S. households’, Journal of financial planning, 29 (2), pp. 54-60
To find a journal select Journal title from the drop-down menu. Then type in the journal name and click to Search Catalogue
From the list of journals that appear look for the one you need and check that it includes [electronic resource] after the title.
Click the title to go into the full record and look at the information on the copy details tab. You can then click on the Full text available link within the record to go to the publisher’s website.
The way online journals look on your device will vary depending on the publisher’s website. Don’t worry - there will be common features for each online journal. Including a list of the years and or volumes, contents list for each part/issue, options to view the journal article online or download the journal article as a pdf document which you can read off-line or print-out (if you have access to a printer) to read away from your screen.
In this example
Kim, K.T. and Hanna, S.D. (2016) ‘The impact of the 2008-2009 stock market crash of the wealth of U.S. households’, Journal of financial planning, 29 (2), pp. 54-60
Find the year/volume (2016) Volume 29 part/issue2, then choose the issue and from the contents list use the page number information pp. 54-60 to pinpoint the article that you need.
There may only be access to some of the years for which the journal has been published, for example we might not have access to all the older volumes. If you have any problems using an online journal or accessing a specific article contact the library using one of the methods at the end of this document.
