STORYLINE:
Violence continued in Iraq on Monday with four suicide car bombings and other militant attacks in Baghdad, Tikrit, Samarra and Baqouba which killed 14 people.
In Baghdad's Yarmouk district, a suicide car bomb aimed at a US convoy missed its target and instead killed a six-year-old girl and the suicide bomber, police and hospital officials said. Five other people were injured in the blast.
Police sources said a US humvee was damaged in the attack and US soldiers were seen fixing the bonnet of their vehicle.
There was no US comment on the blast, but US soldiers and Iraqi police immediately sealed off the area.
Meanwhile in Tikrit, a suicide car bomber killed two Iraqi police officers and injured six civilians after being surrounded by security forces in Saddam Hussein's hometown north of Baghdad.
A Tikrit police Lieutenant Colonel said four patrol cars had surrounded what they thought was a suspected car when it blew up.
He said the driver drove towards one of the police vehicles and detonated the bomb.
Seven cars - four civilian and three police vehicles - were also damaged, according to the police
The injured people were taken to Tikrit teaching hospital for treatment.
In Khan Beni Saab, 25 kilometres (16 miles) south of Baqouba, a car bomb killed five Iraqi policemen and wounded ten others.
Meanwhile, in the Khadra neighbourhood of Samarra, about 95 kilometres (60 miles) north of Baghdad, a suicide car bomber blew himself up as a US-Iraqi patrol was passing by, police Lt. Qassim Mohammed said.
As emergency crews gathered, a roadside bomb detonated and gunmen in two speeding cars also opened fire on the crowd, leading to a more than 30 minute exchange of gunfire.
Three policemen were killed in the explosion and a total of 16 civilians were injured, Mohammed said.
The spiralling violence and rising US death toll - it has pushed past 1,700 - comes despite crackdowns by Iraqi and American forces that continued
on Monday, with hundreds of suspected militants being rounded up in the past two weeks.
