The UK has some of the best Universities and research institutes in the world. In some areas this is backed up by the ability to commercialise these ideas rapidly and with great success: for instance we are world leaders in areas such as pharmaceuticals and aerospace technology.
But all too often business complains that it is better to develop ideas in the UK and commercialise the idea in other countries, such as the USA. Other complaints are that finance is hard to come by, that support from Government is not strong enough nor joined up enough or that the regulatory environment makes some projects unviable.
These areas are the focus of the Technology Strategy Board to 2015 -- so what should Government be doing to ensure that the UK really is the best place in the world to develop and commercialise an idea and what can we learn from areas where the process has worked well in the past?
