Kenneth Elkin, formerly associated with the Los Angeles-based band Sextile, is the creative force behind VALI S.C., an indie project blending elements of shoegaze, post-punk, and coldwave. VALI S.C. (pronounced “Valley”) debuted with the EP To Set the Sea in Wolves Teeth, released in February 2022. And later a RE-RELEASE in (EURO-VISION) in which was released via digital as well as cassette tape back in march by the German label "summer darling tapes" The work is inspired by Elkin’s journey and the concept of evolution, manifestation and trauma, as well as reflecting themes of rebirth and homage, including a dedication to his former Sextile bandmate Eddie, who tragically passed away from a drug overdose October 6, 2019. For the European release Elkin added 2 more track one being "BLACK" and the other "Cry lies".
This music video for "BLACK" is Elkin's directorial debut, in which he flew to Austin TX just to capture the essence of how he was feeling internally . "I was focused and in such a melancholic state the entire time I was location scouting and shooting footage" . "I remember the last time I was there was with Eddie and the rest of sextile doing the whole SXSW festival. It seemed like everywhere I turned in downtown Austin I was hit with a feeling of nostalgia and a flood of memories would pervert my every thought . We were excited to play that festival and it was my first SXSW experience. We played 5 days straight and I was able to really get a feel for what would become my home 7 years later ".
The EP draws from influences from early "Tropic of Cancer" Sonic Youth and early 4AD texture, creating a nostalgic and atmospheric experience. Tracks such as "BLACK” showcase lush guitar textures and a meditative, timeless quality that Elkin describes as capturing the “stillness of the universe” in chaos .
