TRANSFAC® was the first and is the most comprehensive database on eukaryotic transcription factors, their genomic binding sites and DNA-binding profiles. It includes a collection of over 9000 positional weight matrices, each being a binding site model for a transcription factor, derived from the wealth of experimentally proven transcription factor binding sites (TFBS) that are also stored in the TRANSFAC® database.
TRANSFAC® can be used for identification of potential TFBS in DNA sequences and as an encyclopedia of transcriptional regulation. It is integrated with the geneXplain® platform and in either way serves its users by revealing the basic gene regulatory mechanisms of a gene, or a group of genes, under study.
