If you are planning bariatric surgery or have undergone surgery a few days back, you must have some questions about the surgery and aftercare tips. Most patients have questions about pain, discomfort, and recovery after surgery. In this video, Dr B Ramana, Consultant- General Surgery, Robotic Surgery, R N Tagore Hospital, Kolkata, talks in detail about precautions to take after robotic bariatric surgery.
Besides discussing post-operative care management, he also cautions patients to take any discomfort, problem, or medical issue after this surgery seriously and contact the doctor immediately. Here are a few things that patients must keep in mind after bariatric robotic surgery.
1. The patients undergoing bariatric robotic surgery are discharged the next day. They can take a bath using mild soap and water. There is no need to stay in bed; they can walk normally within or outside their house. They must target at least an hour's walk every day.
2. If the patient has a sugar or blood pressure issue, taking prescribed medicines on time is imperative. They must also closely watch their sugar and blood pressure readings and note it in a diary. They can discuss the same with their doctor the next time they visit the hospital. This way, the doctor can advise dosage correction according to the noted readings.
3. First few days after bariatric robotic surgery, the patient cannot take solid food like chapati or rice. They are put on a liquid diet for 8-10 days, including tea, coconut water, lemon water, boiled chicken soup, etc. They should not take more than 1-2 ounces of liquid in one go. If required, they can drink more after some time. They must refrain from consuming soft drinks, alcohol, sugar, juice, etc.
4. Patients must immediately contact the doctor if they feel uncomfortable or in pain.
