France has accused Australia of threatening its relationship with NATO by supporting a new UN treaty - Prohibition of Nuclear Weapons.
France believes the support for the 2021 treaty undermines the importance of the 1968 Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty, which was signed by Australia and all major nuclear powers.
Prime Minister Anthony Albanese believes the support for the new treaty is the Labor Party doing its best.
The new treaty is backed by 93 nations.
However, none of them are major nuclear powers.
