In her Budget 2024 speech on “Embracing Older Workers”, MP Sylvia Lim emphasized the critical role older persons played in society, underscoring the mantra that "60 is the new 40."
While she recognised the government's efforts to support older workers through initiatives like the senior employment credit and SkillsFuture measures, she highlighted that age discrimination in the workplace was very much alive in Singapore, as borne out by personal accounts and MOM reports.
She cited evidence from the World Health Organisation that every person aged differently and there were 80 year olds who had the physical and mental capacity of much younger people. Furthermore, with the advance of technology and AI, there were fewer jobs that older people could not do.
She expressed the hope that the upcoming anti-discrimination legislation would outlaw questions about age in recruitment, promotion, redundancy and training.
