Farmer suicides account for 11.2% of all suicides in India. Tamma Carleton, a researcher at the University of California, compared suicide and climate data, concluding that climate change in India may have "a strong influence" on suicides, triggering more than 59,000 suicides in 30 years. Global warming could cause frequent and severe failures of the Indian summer monsoon in the next two centuries
More than anything else, the failure of Monsoon has a huge impact on the life of the Indian farmer. Most Indian farmers rely on good crop produce during Monsoon to earn their living and in order to overcome debts incurred. Crop failure and/or deficient rainfall is one big reason for mass farmer suicides across the country.
Through a musical Mime, Grade 2 enacted this tragic and India’s most haunting phenomenon during their Assembly. Portraying the stark reality of farmer suicides in a heart wrenching performance, the students brought tears to many who witnessed their emotional act. Reminding us again that we need to do something NOW ... they offered the solution of reducing global warming by growing, conserving, protecting our greenery.
