Colonialism and imperialism in the Estonian context in most cases relate to the rule of the Russian Empire and the local Baltic German elite over the native population. However, with the birth of the independent Estonian republic and the increasing economic prosperity of its people, the position of Estonians in the world changed, and soon they began to see themselves as white Europeans, interacting with the rest of the world. In Estonian art, too, we can see different ways of depicting the foreign and the exotic.
