This video documents the removal of a small area of Purple Sea Urchins on July 8th, 2016.
California's Northern Coastal shallow reefs are now totally dominated by billions of small, empty, and hungry Purple Sea Urchins, averaging one inch in diameter. No future kelp forests stand a chance of episodic reseeding and regrowth without a massive removal program.
This is an early, voluntary effort to do time studies and testing for commercial divers and the Cal. Dept. of Fish & Wildlife, clearing small reef areas to see if kelp beds will restart or survive with management efforts like this.
