Chief, Franz Kline. Franz Kline Explained.
#franzkline
Franz Kline is considered one of the greatest gestural abstract expressionists because of his austere black and white compositions with bold brushstrokes. Importantly, Kline not only paints black strokes on a white background, but also paints the white next to and on top of the black, creating a seductive tension between the figure and the background. Kline insisted that the creation of his paintings was not pre-planned. While one might assume that the paintings were quickly completed in one sitting because of their spontaneity, the actual process suggests otherwise. In fact, Kline drew all the time, making tiny black ink sketches on whatever paper he could find, including the thin pages of telephone books. Some of his paintings are reminiscent of one of these drawings, or sometimes several of them.
