This started out as a discussion of basic electronics repair, testing and how I go about fault finding. Then the wheels kind of fell off. Maybe you'll find it useful and interesting anyway. For the most part, this is pretty much "real time".
I'm actually quite impressed by the power supply's robustness. Whether due to dumb luck (transformer core saturation limiting the current from reaching destructive levels) or protective measures in the design, I'm sure it went unnoticed for a minimum of several hours before someone pulled the plug and donated the clock radio to the thrift store.
This clock radio's memory retention system is unlike anything I've ever seen done before. There is also some "hidden" capability: the snooze duration can be set anywhere from 0 (yes, really) to 60 minutes!
