STORYLINE:
Hong Kong''s Chief Executive Tung Chee-hwa returned home on Sunday and went straight into a meeting with the man imminently expected to be named his successor; Chief Secretary Donald Tsang.
When the two men emerged separately some 45 minutes later, the mystery over Tung''s rumoured resignation remained unresolved.
Neither man spoke to reporters gathered outside the Central Government Office.
Tung had been in Beijing where he met with China''s president, premier and other top officials.
While there, he was appointed to the Chinese People''s Political Consultative Conference, a top advisory body to the country''s legislature, fuelling speculation that he was about to resign.
He reportedly will be named one of the group''s vice chairmen, a title usually given to retired leaders.
Before leaving Beijing, on Sunday, Tung once again said that he would clarify his position "at an appropriate time."
Tung has become increasingly unpopular since taking over the running of the former British colony in 1997.
Critics say his government has not been responsive to Hong Kong''s economic woes, voters'' calls for democratic reforms or the outbreak of severe acute respiratory syndrome (SARS) in 2003.
By contrast, Tsang is generally well-liked.
He''s been involved in running Hong Kong for almost 40 years, working his way up from lowly beginnings.
