This read just confirmed that apparently I have a thing for pirates and trickster gods. I really enjoyed this book.
The world building was amazing, and it sucked me in. It reminded me a bit of the Bridge Kingdom with all the islands scattered but here this is one king who rules them all, and they wield the most dangerous and uncontrollable magic. I loved the different magic systems and how they worked.
I’m also a big fan of family secrets and this book had some great ones! I’m excited to see what more there are to come in the next one considering what happened in this one.
I loved the creatures too - mermaids, magically crazy people, sea monsters …
The reason it isn’t a 5 was that I called most of the major family twists. Like a roller coaster I still loved the ride, but I knew what was coming.
I’ve already picked up book two and can’t wait to see what comes next.
